Location: Action Center to End World Hunger, 6 River Terrace, Battery Park City (1,2,3 and A,C,E to Chambers Street)
Free and open to the public, food and beverages will be provided.

What do Sharon, Sahena, Muriel, and Martina all have in common?  Their lives, like millions of others around the world, have been affected by climate change.  Come hear their stories in Sisters on the Planet, a documentary illustrating the impacts of climate change on women worldwide. Following the film, Oxfam Action Corps NYC will host a lively discussion on climate equity and what we can do here in the U.S. to help those most vulnerable respond to the dangers of climate change.

The New York Open Center is hosting a lecture about the future of New York City as an eco-city. 

Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030 is the first serious green plan in our city’s history. But, there are many challenges. What will it take to create an authentic eco-city that can be a model for the world? Come join some of New York City’s leading green figures in an exploration of the potential, the problems and the way forward: NYC Councilman James F. Gennaro, Ariella Rosenberg Maron and Janna Olson.

Ecological Design with Native Plants

Join Drosera as they host a two-day workshop which will examine the current popularity of landscaping with native plants from an ecological perspective. Lecture and field components will illustrate what makes a plant native, as well as where and how to use them.

Learn the differences between traditional and ecological landscaping methods.  Discover the benefits of native plants for wildlife, the environment, and human health.  Find out what species are native to the New York City-area and how to create a visually arresting plant palette.
 
Lecture: October 8, 7-8pm
Field: October 11, 2:30-4pm

Social Enterprise Conference 2008

Columbia Business School’s Social Enterprise and International Development Clubs will host the 7th Annual Social Enterprise Conference. This year’s Conference, “The Moment of NOW: Market Innovations in Social Enterprise,” will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 at The Riverside Church, steps away from Columbia University’s Morningside Campus in New York City. The Conference coincides with the annual Botwinick Award, a distinction that is bestowed upon an outstanding leader, individual or representative of a business organization, exemplifying the highest standard of professional or ethical conduct. The recipient and keynote speaker this year is Jeff Immelt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric Corporation.

The Scrap Kins Kids Eco-Fashion Show & Recycled Craft Jam!

Join The Scrap Kins on Monday October 13th from 2-6pm at Habana Outpost in Fort Greene, Brooklyn for a super fun day of recycled craft projects and a Kids Eco-Fashion Show featuring Scrap Kins fashion tees, eco-accessories, and organic hair and make-up done by a professional stylist.  Free and open to the public!

Based on the childhood drawings of illustrator Brian Yanish, The Scrap Kins are a family of monster characters that live in a recycling center and build a world out of the things people throw away.  The Scrap Kins' mission is to foster eco-awareness, promote recycling and encourage kids to use their imagination.  Do-It-Yourself resourcefulness empowers children to create and make a difference in their environment.

“How to Live Sustainably in New York City”

 

A class titled “How to Live Sustainably in New York City” will be taught by Les Judd, President of Green Boroughs in October at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The class, the first of its kind in New York City, will offer a dynamic blend of lecture, walking tours, and panel discussions. The class will start on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM and will conclude on Tuesday, October 21 for the same two hour period. Two intermediate sessions will take place on the consecutive Sundays of October 12 and October 19 from 1 – 3 PM. The class costs $39 and is being offered through the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Continuing Education Department.

Folks from all over the city are inviting their neighbors in to share potluck meals & learn about everything from community gardens & window boxes to homemade pickles & blackberry jam!

Thanks for a Great Supper Club!

On Sunday March 30th, Daniel Tainow, Compost Project Coordinator, and Julia Corwin, Compost Project Instructor, from Queens Botanical Garden gave an informative workshop on composting in urban homes. The session was very informative about compost and worm "condos" - there were lots of great discussions about reducing our waste! Thanks Daniel and Julia!
